  • A student salon was held in a bright afternoon on July 6 in Room 201, No. 2 Qunxian Building of Xiamen University.

The theme of the salon was legal culture of different countries, and seven students from six countries and regions made presentations. Professor Chen Huiping was invited as moderator and Professor John CHAO as commentator. The salon consisted of two panels. In the first panel, three participants from three countries made wonderful presentations. Ms Tania Bolanos from Colombia briefly introduced Colombia’s Legal and Political System, Mr. Patthara Limsira from Thailand presented on The Romance of Legal Approaches in Thailand, and Prof. Yen-Chiang Chang from Taiwan who is teaching at Shanghai Maritime University as associate professor shared his personal experience from a Legal Enforcement Officer to a Legal Scholar. In the second panel, Mr. Chijioke Chris Ohuruogu from Nigeria gave A Snapshot of Nigerian Legal System, Mr. Meng Siyang from China talked about The Rising Legal Consciousness of Citizens in Temporary China, Ms Lina M. Monten from Finland briefly introduced INTERPOL-The Legal Aspects of the Organization, and Ms Su Chang from China introduced on Ancient Chinese Legal Thought-Shang Yang.

The speakers from different countries introduced different legal systems of their countries or the international organization they are working for. The salon covered very far-ranging and insightful issues which showed that diversity and congruence of legal cultures exist in our multicolored world. The presentation by Ms Su Chang was very impressive. She introduced the thoughts of a thinker in ancient China, Shang Yang (B.C. 390-B.C.338), which help the other participants to understand the age-old civilizations of China more profoundly and comprehensively.

During the course of salon, participants were very active in raising questions which brought more exchanges among participants. The whole classroom was filled with heated atmosphere. It can be said that this salon bridged the understanding and communications among various legal cultures.
