H.E. Judge Shi Jiuyong’s Remarks on the Opening Ceremony of Xiamen Academy of International Law to be held in Xiamen, on Monday, 6 July 2009
Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen:
Never before has Asia seen a gathering so successfully organized for the promotion of public international law as this, the grand opening of the 2009 session of Xiamen Academy of International law, now in its fourth year in the city of Xiamen.
As Chairman of the Curatorium of Xiamen Academy I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere congratulations to all those who are involved in organizing this event. I would also like to express my warmest welcome to the invited widely renowned scholars of international law, together with the distinguished guests, we have invited to this opening ceremony. Likewise, I express my deep gratitude to our guest speaker today, H.E. Prof. Rahamad Mohamad, Secretary General of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization, who is going to sign an important academic cooperation memorandum with Xiamen Academy of International Law on behalf of his organization. And to Mrs Liu Yang, Executive Vice President of the China Society of Law, I express particular gratitude for accepting our invitation to come from Beijing to Xiamen to extend her encouragement to this growing academy in Asia.
Since the establishment of Xiamen Academy in July 2005, the Academy has endeavored to promote study and dissemination of international law through summer lectures in Asia and through its publication of collected courses. The courses and publications have been designed to prepare the young generation of Asian students for their future positive participation in the establishment of a new international legal order together with their counterparts in other parts of the world. To this end, it has been the intention of this Academy to attract more participants from other regions of the world so as to enable them to acquire new knowledge of international law as provided by this Academy and to benefit from their new experience and contact with Asian participants in Xiamen.
The subject-matter of this summer’s programme is of great significance because we are speaking not of international law in general but of particular subjects of international institutional law. International organizations have gradually transformed international society into a coherent body of human activities. The United Nations and its specialized agencies have not only contributed to the maintenance of international peace and security but have also promoted higher standards of living, full employment, and conditions of economic and social progress and development within the framework of cooperation in economic, social, health, cultural, education, and technological fields.. From lectures over the next three weeks, participants will gain rich material sources on the expanded role these international organizations are playing in the formation of a new international legal order.
Ladies and Gentlemen, you will share my view that these summer lectures in Xiamen will enjoy, without any doubt, the greatest success guaranteed them by the fact that so many highly renowned scholars and well qualified experts are here.
My best wishes go out therefore to our invited guests and to all the participants in this summer programme. May I wish the 2009 Xiamen summer session every success.
Thank you.
