  • On July 22nd, we have a precious chance to interview H.E. Judge Bennouna in QunXian Building. He smiled much and we shared a wonderful time together.

Reporter: The mission of the Academy is to promote international academic research, communication and cooperation on international law. Could you talk about your views on and suggestions for our Academy?

Judge Bennouna: I believe the Academy could become a research centre. Participants from different parts of world shall come here to do specific research. First a subject is fixed, and you let the students discuss about it. I mean not just ask professors to come and give lectures, but let the postgraduates do the research by themselves, let them produce something themselves. You know we have our own summer program in Hague Academy of international law. We separate them into two parts to do separate discussion and research. I believe that is a very good way.

Reporter:Now more and more students learn international law, could you give them some suggestions ? What is the best way to learn the subject?

Judge Bennouna: First and most important, you should have an overall understanding of international law. That’s why I do appreciate the way Professor Shearer delivering his lecture. He provides a landscape of international law which is very helpful to young learners.

Then on such a basis, you can choose a specific area that interests you most and explore it deeper, in a more professional way.

What I emphasize most is to “contribute to the subject”, which is also the output part. You shall pay much attention to hot spot issues and raise your own questions. In international law we still have many questions that don’t reach a final conclusion, where you could try to have your own contribution.

Reporter: What make you success in this area? What’s the golden experience?

Judge Bennouna: I met excellent teachers, who gave me a lot of golden directions and offered me good chances. I have great interest in international law myself. Interest plays a key role here. Not everyone could meet good chances. But everyone can explore his interest and make success on it.

Reporter: Can you talk about your wishes to the future development of our Academy?

Judge Bennouna: The Academy shall have more activities in the future and I wish it become the world renowned Academy in international law.
