Prof. Surya Subedi

Professor Subedi’s high legal competence spans anumber of areas including international trade, investment, and environment. Professor Subedi received his doctoral degree in law from the University of Oxford, an LLM with Distinction in international law from the University of Hull, and an LLB from Tribhuvan University. He has been Professor of International Law at the University of Leeds since 2004. He has published extensively, including sixbooks, multiple book chapters, and nearly 60 articles in major international law journals.

He is a practising barrister in England, was the UN Special Rapporteur for human rights in Cambodia (2009-2015), and was a member of the Advisory Group on Human Rights to the British Foreign Secretary (2010-2015).

He is a founder of the Asian Society of International Law and founding editor of the Asian Journal of International Law, where he acts as Chairman of its Board of Editors. He is also Editor for the book series, “International Law and Human Rights” published by Routledge.


Professor Subedi has recently in 2017 been appointed an honorary Queen’s Counsel (QC) by the Her Majesty the Queen of the UK in recognition of his contribution to the development of international law.
